If you are a Zcash (ZEC) user, then security and privacy are likely one of your primary concerns. Thankfully, Ledger recently implemented support for Zcash, allowing Ledger Nano S owners to store, manage, receive and send funds from their device.

Thankfully, setting up a Zcash wallet on your Ledger device is a relatively painless process, and should take just a few minutes to complete. If you haven’t already set up your Ledger wallet, you will need to do so before beginning this tutorial.

Install the Zcash App

Step 1: To begin managing your Zcash on your Ledger Nano S, you will first need to install the Zcash app. To do this, you will need to open the Ledger Live software on your computer and navigate to the Manager section by clicking either ‘Open Manager’ if available, or ‘Manager’ in the left panel.

Step 2: After navigating to the Manager section, Ledger Live will begin checking whether your Ledger device is plugged in and unlocked. When you see the below screen, plug your Ledger into your computer and unlock the device and navigate to the dashboard by entering your PIN. This should be automatically detected by Ledger Live software.

Step 3: Once you have unlocked your wallet, you should be prompted to ‘Allow Ledger manager’ on your Ledger device. Once this screen is visible, click the right button to confirm. Once confirmed, you will be automatically redirected to the Manager section of Ledger Live, where you are able to install new apps.

Step 4: In the Ledger Manager, you will need to search for the Bitcoin app in the app catalog. Although we technically need to install the Zcash app, both the Bitcoin and Ethereum apps need to be installed first, as the Zcash app needs these to function. To do this, type Bitcoin into the search bar. This will automatically filter the Bitcoin app from the list of available applications.

Step 5: Next, you will want to click ‘Install’ next to the Bitcoin app, in the below image, this is shown with the orange logo. After clicking ‘Install’ a new window should pop up showing the installation progress. Note that you may be prompted to enter your Ledger PIN on your device during this time, you may need to enter this to begin the installation process. Installation should complete in less than 30 seconds.

Step 6: Once the Bitcoin app is installed, you will need to complete steps 4 and 5 again, but instead search for and install the Ethereum app. Again, you may be prompted to unlock your Ledger device using your PIN.

Step 7: Once both the Bitcoin and Ethereum apps have been installed, you will then be able to install the Zcash app. This time, search for Zcash in the app catalog, and click the ‘Install’. The Zcash app will then be installed in the same way as the Bitcoin and Ethereum apps.

Step 8: Now that you have got the Zcash app installed, you will need to click the (+) button next to Accounts on the left side of your Ledger Live software. Ensure that you keep your Ledger connected to your PC during this entire process.

Step 9: Clicking this will bring up the ‘Add accounts’ screen. Here you will need to type Zcash into the search box, and select Zcash from the drop-down menu, before clicking ‘Continue’

Step 10: After clicking continue Ledger Live will check if your Ledger device is unlocked, if it isn’t enter your PIN to unlock your device and then navigate to and open the newly installed Zcash app. Once this is detected in Ledger Live, click the ‘Continue’ button to begin creating your Zcash account.

Step 11: Here, you will be able to choose a name for your new Zcash account, we have entered ‘cryptocoin’ but you can choose whatever is memorable for you. After entering your choice, click the checkbox on the right before clicking the ‘Add account’ button.

Step 12: Once you have added the account, you will be presented with the ‘Account successfully added’ confirmation, and you can now close the prompt.

Step 13: Now that you have successfully created your Zcash account, this will be available to interact with in Ledger Live, allowing you to send and receive ZEC by selecting your newly created Zcash account in the ‘Send’ and “Receive’ section.
