[Tutorial] How to Securely Store Your Tezos (XTZ) with TezBox

TezBox was one of the earliest wallets released for Tezos, and has developed somewhat of a cult following in the community, thanks to the wide variety of features it offers — being arguably the most featureful Tezos wallet. 

By connecting your Ledger Nano S with TezBox, you will be able to benefit from the security of a hardware wallet, and the full-fledged features of a desktop wallet, including the ability to delegate XTZ and interact with the Tezos mainnet.

Currently, TezBox is available for both mobile (Android) and desktop devices, and there is an iOS version currently in the works. It is also available as a Chrome plugin, ensuring that practically any device can be used to access your wallet.


Make sure to update your “Ledger Live” App from here:


  • Ledger Nano S wallet
  • Official Ledger USB cable
  • TezBox compatible device

Installing the Tezos App

Step 1: Securely storing Tezos (XTZ) on the Ledger Nano S is a relatively simple task that first begins with you installing the Tezos app on your Ledger.

To start, open Ledger Live and navigate to the ‘Manager’ section on the left.

Step 2: Here, you will be prompted to connect and unlock your Ledger device. To do so, plug your Ledger Nano S into your computer using an official Ledger USD cable. You will be prompted to enter your PIN code, doing so will unlock your device and automatically take you to the Ledger Dashboard.

Step 3: Once Ledger Live has detected that your device is unlocked, you will receive a notification on your Ledger asking you to ‘Allow Ledger manager.’ Click the right button once to confirm, this will again be detected by Ledger Live, which will automatically redirect you to the Ledger Live manager.

Step 4: Once Ledger Manager is open, scroll down, or use the search box to find the ‘Tezos Wallet’ app.

Now, install the Tezos app. You may be required to unlock your Ledger by entering your PIN to begin the installation process.

Connecting Ledger with TezBox

Step 1: After installing TezBox, we will need to create your Tezos wallet. To begin, open TezBox and accept the terms and conditions to take you to the wallet selector step.

Note that for the purposes of this tutorial we will be using the Mac OS version of TezBox, though the steps involved a similar on all operating systems. Step 2: Accept the terms and privacy policy, and select the ‘Link your TezBox’ option. Now, ensure that your Ledger Nano S is still plugged in and unlocked, once unlocked, open the ‘Tezos Wallet’ app on the device.

Step 3: You should now be at the step where are asked to link your TezBox with the Ledger Nano S. Leave the HD Derivation Path as the default value, and click the ‘LINK TEZBOX’ button. After clicking, your Ledger device should prompt you to ‘Provide public key’ — press the right button once to allow.

Step 4: TezBox should automatically detect your authorization, and will then retrieve your Tezos address from your device. After you see the below screen, click the ‘CONTINUE’ button to create a password for your wallet.

Step 5: On the ‘Secure Your TezBox’ screen, enter a secure password that only you will remember, and click the ‘ENCRYPT WALLET’ button. You will then be taken directly to your wallet, where you will find your Tezos address, balance and a variety of options, including allowing you to delegate your XTZ to receive block rewards.

Now that you have set up TezBox with your Ledger Nano S, you will need your hardware wallet at hand whenever you’re looking to send payments or delegate your XTZ.
