One of the main concerns when using a software or web wallet is security. Although many software wallets offer impressive features and an easy way to access your crypto portfolio, this often comes at the compromise of reduced security.
That said, dozens of wallet providers have implemented support for hardware wallets such as the Ledger Nano S, allowing cryptocurrency users to easily bolster the security of their favorite wallet.
Galleon is one of the more popular Tezos (XTZ) wallets, and is one of the few that is compatible with the Ledger Nano S. Beyond this, Galleon also allows users to interact with Tezos contracts and delegate XTZ, with a simple to use interface designed with beginners in mind.
To get started with this tutorial, you will need to have Galleon already installed on your computer and will need your Ledger device at hand for several steps:
Make sure to update your “Ledger Live” App from here:
Installing the Tezos App
Step 1: Securely storing Tezos (XTZ) on the Ledger Nano S is a relatively simple task that first begins with you installing the Tezos app on your Ledger.
To start, open Ledger Live and navigate to the ‘Manager’ section on the left.
Step 2: Here, you will be prompted to connect and unlock your Ledger device. To do so, plug your Ledger Nano S into your computer using an official Ledger USD cable. You will be prompted to enter your PIN code, doing so will unlock your device and automatically take you to the Ledger Dashboard.
Step 3: Once Ledger Live has detected that your device is unlocked, you will receive a notification on your Ledger asking you to ‘Allow Ledger manager.’ Click the right button once to confirm, this will again be detected by Ledger Live, which will automatically redirect you to the Ledger Live manager.
Step 4: Once Ledger Manager is open, scroll down, or use the search box to find the ‘Tezos Wallet’ app.
Now, install the Tezos app. You may be required to unlock your Ledger by entering your PIN to begin the installation process.
Connecting Ledger with Galleon
Step 1: After installing Galleon, you’ll need to create a new wallet. To do so, open Galleon and select your desired language.
Step 2: After selecting your language, you’ll be redirected to your wallet setup instructions. Here, choose the ‘Connect with Ledger’ option, which should then prompt you to connect your device, unlock it using your PIN and open the Tezos Wallet app.
Step 3: Your Ledger should then display a message, saying ‘Provide Public Key’. Click the right button once to approve this. Shortly after, Galleon will automatically redirect you to your wallet, allowing you to send and receive payments under the safety of your Ledger Nano S.
Once you’ve reached your wallet screen, you’re now ready to use Galleon. Remember that you will need to have your Ledger to hand whenever you want to send a payment or verify an address.
