When it comes to blockchains, ICON can be described as somewhat of a behemoth, being designed to act as the glue that connects all other decentralized networks together under one platform.
Because of this, ICON is not competing with other blockchains for the limelight — instead actually benefiting when any of the blockchains incorporated within its network succeed.
With a goal of “hyperconnecting the world” ICON hopes to bring together institutions, allowing these to better communicate with one another, transact and improve their offering. To accomplish this goal, ICON makes use of a unique ‘loopchain’ platform known as the ‘Nexus’, which connects different blockchains together via ICON Republic, which consists of citizen nodes and community representatives, which are used to represent the communities connected by the Nexus.
ICONex is the official wallet for ICON, and is available as an extension from the Chrome web store. Beyond being arguably the most popular wallet for ICX, ICONex is also one of the very few ICON wallets to offer compatibility with Ledger hardware wallets. As it stands, this compatibility is limited to transferring your ICX from your Ledger to other ICX wallets via ICONex.
Besides allowing you to send and receive ICX, ICONex also allows you to manage your Ethereum, interact with smart contracts, and manage your portfolio from within the wallet. Overall, ICONex is a simple, lightweight wallet, making it ideal for those looking to access their ICX on the go.
- The ICONex browser extension installed
- A Ledger Nano S with the ICON app installed

Connect Ledger with ICONex
Step 1: To get started, you will need to open the ICONex extension on Google Chrome. This can be found in the upper right side of Google Chrome, in the extensions bar.
Step 2: After opening the ICONex extension, plug your Ledger Nano S into your computer using an official Ledger USB cable. Once connected, unlock the device by entering your PIN and open the ICON app.
If you don’t have the ICON app installed, follow our guide to installing new apps on your Ledger Nano S, and return to this step after.
With the ICON app open on your Ledger device, select the ‘Connect to Ledger’ option.
Step 3: On the next screen, click the ‘Connect’ button and you will be prompted to choose which wallet you want to transfer your ICX from.
On this screen, scroll down and select the wallet you want to transfer ICX from by clicking the ‘Transfer’ button.
Step 4: After clicking the ‘Transfer’ button you will be asked to provide the address details of the person you want to send ICX to.
In the ‘Transfer Amount’ field, enter the amount of ICX you want to transfer. Note that you can check the ‘MAX’ box on the right to send your entire balance. Leave the Step Limit as the default setting unless you want to expedite the transfer.
Finally, enter the recipient’s address in the ‘Receiving Address’ field before clicking the ‘Transfer’ button.
Now that you’ve got the hang of managing your ICX with your Ledger, why not spend a few minutes and learn how to use your Ledger Nano S as a security key?
