The Ethereum platform or Network is a blockchain based decentralized computing platform that aims to provide the backbone for the future of decentralized applications (dApps). The native cryptocurrency of the platform — ether (ETH) is used as gas to power smart-contracts on the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) and reward miners for confirming transactions.
Ethereum was first described in a white paper by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 as a distributed computing operating system with scripting functionalities in the form of smart contracts. Since then, Ethereum has undergone several upgrades, many of which improve the scaling and usability of the platform.
To encourage more users into using Ethereum and Ethereum based tokens, it is imperative that wallets used to store and utilize these assets are readily available to every potential user. Thankfully, several such wallets now exist, allowing users to store their ETH regardless of which device they use.
With Ethereum (ETH) looking to set to achieve dramatic growth in 2019 and beyond, it is paramount to choose and use an Android wallet that provides the security and flexibility needed when storing your portfolio. Arguably, one of the best ways to do this is with an iOS Ethereum wallet, allowing you to benefit from the renowned security of Apple devices, with the portability of your mobile phone.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best Ethereum wallets currently available on iOS.
Note: We will be not be discussing any multi-asset walls, and will be restricting our focus to ETH specific wallets for iOS.
Cipher Browser is an iOS-based Ethereum wallet released by the HardFork Incorporation — a blockchain technology and application development company based in San Francisco, US.
Currently, the app has a 4.6-star rating on the app store, with most customer reviews commending the wallet for its sleek user interface and easy access to Ethereum’s dApp ecosystem. Cipher also allows the user to switch between Ethereum mainnet and multiple testnets — Ropsten, Rinkeby, and Kovan.
Contrary to what its name suggests, Cipher is not just a web browser, but also a full-fledged Ethereum wallet. Users can back up their wallet with BIP39 recovery phrases as well as import pre-existing private keys with ease. In addition, Cipher is also one of the few ETH wallets to allow users to sign messages with the addresses.
Cipher is a client-side wallet application, meaning nothing ever leaves the user’s device and all private keys along with sensitive user data are stored locally. Because of this, Cipher can be considered one of the more private Ethereum wallets available on iOS.
Ethereum and ERC20 balances in the wallet are protected by a 6-digit PIN, Touch ID, and Face ID authentication as well as Apple’s secure enclave technology.
- Supports sending ETH and tokens to ENS domain addresses.
- View ERC721-based digital collectibles.
- Built-in Web 3.0 dApp browser.
Mwallet is developed by the Shanghai Tongmai Information Technology Company Limited and was released on the Apple App store in November 2018, making it one of the newer Ethereum wallets available. Mwallet is part of the MyToken platform and its family of apps that are built by the same company.
Mwallet is secured and backed up through a locally cached BIP39 mnemonic passphrase. Users can also use the same backup to export the wallet into any number of external clients, and can also import pre-existing wallets. Mwallet also allows users to define a custom storage path for any imported wallets.
Among many other features, Mwallet allows users to display ERC721 collectibles such as badges. Mwallet also allows users to send multiple transactions in a single batch — a much-requested feature present in surprisingly few iOS wallets.
- Built-in decentralized exchange powered by BTON Lightning Network.
- Built-in DICE game powered by BTON where users can earn daily dividends by staking their MyTokens (MT).
- Allows users to accelerate stuck transactions or cancel pending transactions by quickly issuing a recall.
MEWConnect for iOS devices was released on the Apple App Store in September 2018 and has since collected close to 500 reviews, rating the product at a healthy 4.6 Stars. It is developed by MyEthereWallet Inc. which is the same company behind the ever-popular MyEtherWallet (MEW) web platform.
MEWconnect is the official companion app to the MyEtherWallet web platform and is part of the new updated MEWV5 interface. Just like the web platform, it is a client-side tool that allows users to encrypt and decrypt their private keys that are entirely stored locally within the user’s device.
From a security point-of-view, MEWConnect is about as secure as you can get without using a hardware wallet. Every transaction is verified by two-factor authentication (2FA) and dual-sided transaction verification, while your funds can be backed up with 12, 15, 18 or 21-word phrases.
- Funds and wallet data that are stored in isolated memory vaults — similar to hardware wallets.
- The wallet itself is decentralized and the codebase is entirely open source.
- QR code support and checksummed formatted addresses for ease of use.
Not happy with the level of security offered by these iOS Ethereum wallets? Why not invest in a cryptocurrency hardware wallet to keep your ETH in air-gapped cold storage while still benefiting from the ease-of-use of an applications interface?
