If you purchased a KeepKey wallet recently, or have an older KeepKey wallet sitting around that you haven’t used in a while, odds are when you next connect it to your computer you will be forced to perform a firmware update before you can use the device.
While this might be a hassle, updating your firmware regularly is a normal part of ensuring the proper functioning of your device, and is essential to ensure it maintains the security features commonly associated with hardware wallets. Firmware updates are commonly used to patch any potential security vulnerabilities, prepare your device for future improvements and improve the functionality of your device.
Thankfully, the KeepKey is one of the easiest hardware wallets to update, and updating your firmware leaves all your current accounts intact, so your KeepKey will be just how you left it once the firmware is updated.
To get started, simply follow our short guide below, and you will have your firmware updated in just a few minutes.
- The KeepKey client app installed
- A microUSB cable
- Your KeepKey device
Updating Your KeepKey Firmware
Step 1: Connect your KeepKey to your computer and open the KeepKey client. If a new update is available for your device, you will be presented with the screen below.
Step 2: When you see this screen, unplug your KeepKey from your computer. Then, hold the button on the right-hand side of your device and simultaneously connect your KeepKey to your computer.
KeepKey client will automatically detect that your device has entered firmware update mode. Similarly, your KeepKey screen should display ‘FIRMWARE UPDATE MODE.’
Step 3: When you are ready, click the ‘Upgrade Bootloader’ button to begin. Your KeepKey will then ask you to ‘VERIFY BACKUP’, asking you to double check that you have your KeepKey recovery sentence safe.
Once you are happy that you have your recovery sentence safely stored, click and the hold the KeepKey button until the ‘PREPARING FOR UPGRADE’ screen is displayed.
Step 4: After a few seconds, KeepKey client should inform you that your firmware update is now complete. To finalize this, disconnect and reconnect your KeepKey.
Your KeepKey has now been updated to the latest version and will be ready to use as normal next time you connect it to your computer.
